SOLANO, Nueva Vizcaya--F4 fans beware. The wildly popular Taiwanese
teen pop idols can apparently trigger another kind of hysteria.

The two senior students at the Solano High School here have accused
the school principal of humiliating them before the student body and
inflicting punishment on them after they had placed the photographs
of the members of the boy band on their identification cards.

The students, Ricardo Apelado and Christian Callanga, promptly
brought a complaint before education authorities against principal
Roger Bagalay for "grave abuse of authority and misconduct."

In the letter complaint to Victoria Tablang, the provincial schools
division superintendent, the two claimed that Bagalay humiliated them
in front of other students during the flag ceremony on July 3.

Copies of the complaint were sent to Education Secretary Edilberto de
Jesus, Gov. Rodolfo Agbayani, the Nueva Vizcaya provincial board and
Solano Mayor Heraldo Dacayo.

The F4--for Flower 4- - are the stars of the hugely popular Taiwanese
soap "Meteor Garden" aired daily on ABS-CBN television.

The "chinovela, " which has largely replaced the Mexican telenovelas
in the hearts of soap mad Filipino TV viewers, is set in a high
school for the affluent in Taiwan, which much explain its popularity
with young students in the country.

The four young men are said to have become household names not just
in Taiwan and the Philipppines but also in Singapore, Hong Kong,
Malaysia and Brunei.

Just for fun

In their affidavit, dated July 14, Apelado and Callanga said Bagalay
called out their names and made them come up the stage during the
flag ceremony. Using a microphone, Bagalay allegedly asked them why
they had placed the photographs of the F4 members on their IDs.

"We told him that we did it for fun because we are fans of the F4,"
the two said.

Apelado and Callanga said Bagalay then asked them if the F4 members
were " paying" them to put their photographs on the IDs.

When they answred "no," Bagalay allegedly slapped them on the

" (It was) so strong that the sound it created was heard by all other
students to our great humiliation, " they said.

Bagalay also allegedly ordered them to perform 50 knee bends
(called " pumping") before the student body.

"It virtually added insult to our injured feelings, " they said.

The INQUIRER sought out Bagalay on Friday but the school's security
guards said he had gone to the division office of the Department of
Education in the Bayongbong town.

This correspondent tried to contact Bagalay at the DepEd division
office but a staff member said he had not gone there.

Tablang confirmed that she received the complaint from the students
last week.

"I have not seen him (Bagalay) here yet but I will ask him to answer
the allegations, " she said.
